Joe took his purple belt under Fabio Novaes, and his brown and black under Alan Ribeiro at Caridian Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Tampa. Novaes was awarded his black belt by Marcelo Saporito, who got his own from Carlson Gracie and went on to run Carlson's academy in Copacabana.
